Hailing from Senegal, Diabel Cissokho is from a long line of griots and with his family band has performed with such esteemed artists as Fela Kuti, Youssou N’Dour and Manu Dibango. In West Africa, a griot is a member of a class of travelling poets, musicians and storytellers who maintain the tradition of oral history. Cissokho grew up in Dakar and Tambacounda and has since brought the rich musical and cultural heritage these large cities are steeped in to the rest of the world. In 2010 with bluesman Ramon Goose he released Mansana Blues, which was called “a flavoursome mix of slide guitar, mellow kora and undulating Mandinka rhythms” by fRoots and praised for its “moments of steamy pleasure” by Songlines, which also lauded Cissokho’s “resonant voice”. As part of Africa Express, he has played with Paul McCartney and Damon Albarn and last year he released his fourth solo album Tambacounda Express.
