Widely held as one of the finest young talents in the UK today, Bella Hardy has been well-known in the folk world for quite some time, playing fiddle in a variety of popular line-ups while still a teenager and reaching the finals of the BBC Young Folk Awards in 2004.Despite the already established recognition, 2007’s mature and mesmerising debut album ‘Night Visiting’ still blew people away. Her hypnotic voice and stunning fiddle received rave reviews and she is now one of the folk world’s most brightly shining lights. In 2008 she was given the privileged and daunting task of opening the first ever Folk Prom at the Royal Albert Hall and her composed performance won her even more admirers.
At the end of last summer Hardy released ‘In the Shadow of Mountains’. Here she presented a selection of impressive new works including ‘Sylvie Sovay’, a modern look at the traditional song ‘Sovay Sovay’. The album presents folk music in the best possible way, not as a relic, but as a relevant, human musical form.
Spiral Earth called her latest record ‘a master class in melancholic sensuality’. It is a master class, but Hardy nonetheless seems likely to keep shocking audiences as her unique talent matures further.
