Erland and The Carnival
Erland and the Carnival are a new band formed in London by Simon Tong of the Verve, Blur, and The Good, the Band and the Queen, and featuring: drummer/engineer of the Orb and the Cult, David Nock, synthesizerer Andy Bruce, bassist Danny Wheeler, and folk guitarist and singer, Garwain Erland Cooper.Erland met Tong and Nock through mutual friend, the producer Youth. After Erland recorded a track for Tong and Youth’s Butterfly recordings compilation ‘What the Folk Volume 2’, the three of them began playing together all over London.
Like Pentangle and Fairport Convention who used to seek old songs to bastardise, Erland and the Carnival aren’t prone to standing on ceremony. Their sacrilegious renderings of old classics delight listeners, and their cacophonic, buzzing psychedelic folk, accompanied by a cinematic gallop, reveal five musicians at the very top of their game.
