High Llamas
Live performances from The High Llamas are rare treats these days, and remain highly memorable experiences for those lucky enough to be witness to them. It is twenty years since their eponymous debut record. Nominally a group, ‘The High Llamas’ is often used as a moniker for its lead guitarist and songwriter Sean O’Hagan’s personal music efforts (especially remixes), but it most fully describes the collective of O’Hagan, bassist Jon Fell, keyboardist and cellist Marcus Holdaway, and drummer Rob Allun; sometimes augmented by Pete Aves, John Bennett and percussionist Dominic Murcott.Over the last two decades The High Llamas output has been very diverse, often veering towards retro-futuristic confluences of string quartets and hi-fi lounge-pop instrumentation. The High Llamas output often conjures up images of tropical, far-off lands, and has been compared to that of Burt Bacharach and the Beach Boys. Brian Wilson’s influence is clearest on the mid-nineties outing ‘Hawaii’, a musical spaghetti western reflecting on themes of tourism and colonialism. Since the band were dropped by their V2 record label (boo!), O’Hagan has been arranging and producing work for the likes of Super Furry Animals, The Boo Radleys, Doves and Norwegian Sondre Lerche.
Nowadays, The High Llamas’ records are more personal projects. But nonetheless their latest 2007 ‘Can Cadders’ received a very warm welcome in the media; Pitchfork referring to it as ‘another set of pitch-perfect, heart-stoppingly lovely songs about idyllic places and seasonal memories’. Throughout the life of The High Llamas much of their folk-rock music, tinged with elements of bossa nova, electronic and jazz, has conjured up thoughts of summer sun. But rain or shine, it provides the perfect background for an afternoon or evening outdoors.
