Johnny Flynn
Johnny Flynn and his band the Sussex Wit are a folk rock band fronted by an actor, poet, and songwriter who cites W.B. Yeats and Shakespeare among his influences. As an actor Johnny goes by the name of Joe Flynn, but whether it’s Johnny or Joe, he is a young man of great talent.Having attended the Bedales private school on a scholarship (the same school as Lily Allen and the Kooks’ Luke Pritchard) he went on to form his band with Matt Edmonds, Adam Beach, Joe Zeitlin, and Lillie Flynn. They released their first album ‘A Larum’ in May 2008 (UK) and July 2008 (USA). ‘Tickle Me Pink’, the brilliant follow-up to its rowdy debut single The Box, was an iTunes free single of the week, leading to heightened exposure; the Independent called the album ‘a master class in pastoral British folk that pitches itself somewhere between Martin Carthy and Nick Drake, with a dash of Americana’.
Flynn is a quietly confident songwriter, with an air of Will Oldham about him, whose lyrics would function as poetry in a different context. The Wit’s rhythm and melodies provide a fitting accompaniment to his straightforward delivery.
Great friends with Laura Marling and Mumford and Sons, Johnny Flynn and the Sussex Wit are touring Europe supporting the latter break through bright young folk band.
