Lunasa @ Moseley Folk Festival

Lunasa

Over the past decade Lúnasa have been converting hundreds of thousands of concert goers, becoming one of Ireland’s most successful musical exports. Their first release was in 1997 and the mixture of concert and studio recordings was well received and hailed as one of the freshest sounds to come out of Ireland in years. It was instantly a best seller in Ireland and the likes of FRoots and MOJO are firm supporters of the group.

Since that break through Lúnasa’s surprising arrangements and bass led grooves have driven Irish acoustic music into brave new territory. They are redefining Irish music from its root. Founding member Trevor Hutchinson’s upright acoustic bass and the percussive guitar lye at the heart of their sound, and each instrument adds a further layer. The result is still distinctly Irish in flavour but touches on jazz and other improvisational music forms.

Hollywood beckoned in 2001 when Lúnasa were invited to perform in front of 13,000 people at the Hollywood Bowl. In 2005 the group composed and recorded tracks for the soundtrack to ‘Irish Jam’, a feature film starring Anna Friel.

This is distinctly a hard working band. In 2006 their tour schedule was full to the brim with 140 dates. Last year Lúnasa were even invited to perform at The White House.
