Martin Simpson @ Moseley Folk Festival

Martin Simpson

In the 11 year history of the BBC Folk Awards, Martin Simpson has been nominated a record- breaking 23 times. You can only imagine how many times he would have been nominated had the awards been around at the start of his career. Oddly, after more than 35 years as a professional musician, Martin Simpson now seems to be better than ever. Commonly accepted as one of his generation’s finest exponents of the acoustic and slide guitars, his intense, eclectic and spellbinding live shows have long been considered moving storytelling masterpieces.

Simpson spent 15 years living in the US very well. He now carefully combines diverse elements of British, Afro-American, and old-timey music to brilliant effect. He breathes new life into popular and less well-known traditional works, and his own song writing has also produced some real gems from the epic ‘Love Never Dies’ to the moving ‘Never Any Good’ and ‘One Day’.

In a career which has seen him spend time on stage with Jackson Browne, Cara Dillon, Martin Carthy, and Steve Miller among many, many others, Simpson has released 17 solo studio albums, not to mention live, collaborative and compilation records. He’s been crowned BBC Folk Awards Musician of the Year twice, and has won a whole host of other awards, particularly for his last two albums.

2007’s ‘Prodigal Son’ provoked unanimous praise from press and public alike, and the accomplished eclecticism of last year’s ‘True Stories’, which effortlessly embraces New Orleans jazz and countrified pedal guitar, may even have topped it. The CD was nominated for 6 awards, winning Best Traditional Track for ‘Sir Patrick Spens’.

Simpson is guaranteed a place in folk history, but he seems intent on making some more history first.
