The Destroyers
With a line-up boasting 15 extremely talented multi-instrumentalists, vocalists and composers, many of them Birmingham locals, the Destroyers ought to be three or four times better than most other bands. They are at least that.Forged many years ago out of Balkan Basement jam sessions, Birmingham Conservatoire connections and a burning desire to develop a new, unique brand of Gypsy folk, the Destroyers have risen up out of epic busking marathons and kinetically charged standing room-only gigs in their beloved second city.
Recent years have seen their turbo-gothic sound arrive at venues and festivals up and down the country, and in and around Europe. 2009’s highlights included a first Scottish tour, a return to Glastonbury on the Avalon stage, and the Flatpack Film Festival’s opening gig at the recently re-opened Birmingham Town Hall.
Their wildly compulsive jazz and Celtic-tinged music has now been transferred to record with their debut ‘Out of Babel’. Highlights include the upbeat rush of ‘Sirba’, the gothic storyteller ‘The Glass Coffin’ and the more melancholy ‘Copanitsas’. Their riotous live presence bursts forth from within your speakers, on the album which was described by Songlines as a ‘sophisticated, theatrical tour de force’.
Their 2008 Moseley Folk Festival appearance was unforgettable, and this year’s promises to be even better.
