The Low Anthem
Riding high on the back of triumphant performances at last year’s Glastonbury, SXSW, Lollapalooza, and Newport festivals, The Low Anthem are one of the music world’s most hotly tipped acts right now. Their distinct, anthemic brand of Americana manages to rise way above its influences, through its startling lyrical imagery and many magical melodies.Last year’s album ‘Oh My God, Charlie Darwin’, their second full-length adventure, was referred to as ‘ethereal transcendence… laden with poignancy’ by the Guardian. The Low Anthem’s musical palette is, however, a very broad one. Hushed, more solemn moments are punctuated by soaring rock-outs, which show off some apocalyptic folk influences. Uncut called the album ‘a fine mix of hymnal purity and barn storming rock’.
The Low Anthem’s biggest hit to date has been the gorgeous and fragile single ‘Charlie Darwin’. (I guess you’d call it a semi-title track for the album). In it, lead singer Ben Knox Miller’s haunting falsetto is buoyed by softly lapping supporting voices. Fans of the Fleet Foxes are advised not to even consider missing the new kings of the vocal harmony.
Nowadays, The Low Anthem are Miller, Jeff Prystowsky, Jocie Adams, and Mat Davidson. The band was formed in 2006 by Miller, Prystowsky and former member Dan Lefkowitz, and has had the current line up since the following year. Miller, a folk singer and painter from New York, and Prystowsky, a jazz bassist and baseball scholar from New Jersey, met at Brown University while working for WBRU, the United States’ first ever college radio station. The two have played together since 2002, and the band’s current sound shows the maturity of their relationship.
The Low Anthem are refreshingly modern, and beautifully timeless. Their performance at this year’s Moseley Folk Festival will be an unmissable opportunity to catch a band destined for great things.
