The Urban Folk Quartet
Born out of the modern melting pot that is the Birmingham folk music scene, The Urban Folk Quartet only launched in June 2009, but they have already played major gigs in Italy, Spain, Belgium, and, perhaps less surprisingly, here in the UK. They even won the Spanish International Folk Competition for their fourth performance!UFQ are led by Joe Broughton on fiddle, guitar, and mandolin and Paloma Trigas on fiddle. Broughton and Trigas’s careers took pretty similar paths early on; they were respectively discovered in their youths by legendary artists the Albion Band and Carlos Nunez; then separately toured the world alongside more established artists, before together, relatively late in their careers deciding to form their own act. In 2004 they performed their first fiddle duet together and sowed the seeds for what would become their Urban Folk Quartet. Alongside them on guitar, oud and vocals is Frank Moon who met Broughton at the Birmingham Conservatoire, and Tom Chapman on cajon, percussion and vocals.
Technically gifted and already vastly experienced young musicians, UFQ are going to be one to look out for over the coming months and years.
