This week, Team Moseley Folk & Arts are shining a spotlight on our Friday night headliner, Kingfishr.
The trio first came together during the COVID-19 lockdown, when their studies at the University of Limerick were suddenly put on pause. They experienced a meteoric rise after their breakthrough track, Killeagh, went viral.
Written for Killeagh GAA hurling club, the track has amassed almost 50,000,000 (that’s 50 million!) streams on Spotify alone. The Irish Recorded Music Association later confirmed it as the biggest song in a single year this decade by any artist – a staggering achievement, especially considering the band recalls writing the song in just 20 minutes.
This data, albeit truly monumental, is only part of Kingfishr’s story. What began as an experiment born from boredom has grown into one of the most exciting forces contemporary folk has seen in a long time.
Their debut album, Halcyon, released in August 2025, arrived to rave reviews, and shot straight to number 1 on the Irish Singles Chart. Kingfishr quickly followed this up with a sold-out tour of the EU and UK, ending with two nights in Dublin’s 9000-capacity 3Arena. A remarkable achievement for a band only 3 years old.
Halcyon blends traditional folk sounds with Kingfishr’s signature rousing musical style and authentic lyricism. The album serves both as an ode to what and who came before them, whilst signalling what the future of folk looks like.
And speaking of the future, Kingfishr have just released their new single, The Blade. The track, deeper, more introspective and melancholic than the band are known for, signposts an exciting diversification and development in the Kingfishr sound. We can’t wait to hear more new tracks in Moseley Park this September.
At Moseley Folk, we are proud to say that we have long used our stages to platform contemporary sound. Friday night is the perfect opportunity to grab your mates, come down and join us in Moseley Park. We have a feeling you might just discover your new favourite band.
Trust us when we say: you won’t want to miss this one.
